Peggy has lived in Lake Mills since the age of two, when her parents bought a storefront in downtown Lake Mills called “Derse’s Village Square”.   Peggy’s family lived in the very large apartment above the store for many years. She has many fond memories of living right downtown in the heart of Lake Mills, such as being able to walk to Bartel’s Beach with her friends and being able to take part in the Town and Country Days Maxwell Street Days in selling merchandise to the crowds of people in town for the parade.  She also remembers opening the windows that faced the park and listening to the City Band play every Friday night in the summer. Lake Mills has always been home for Peggy.

After graduating from Lake Mills High School in 1985, Peggy attended Carroll College for 2 ½ years working towards a degree in Communications.  She left college to get married in 1988, but returned to vocational school and received her certification in massage therapy, which she practiced for six years.  Thereafter, Peggy again returned to Madison Area Technical College and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. She then began working as an Employment Specialist for Opportunities, Inc. in Fort Atkinson, WI.  She worked with six school districts, assisting students in matching them with business owners willing to train and eventually hire the students as employees.

In 2005, Peggy was offered the position of Store Manager at St. Vincent de Paul Society Thrift Store in Lake Mills.  Her mother was the previous manager for 28 years and her father was a charter member, having founded the organization with five other men from the Johnson Creek and Lake Mills areas.  In 2016, Peggy took the opportunity to become a Case Manager for Colonial Club Senior Activity Center and works with adults over the age of 60 helping them to find valuable resources enabling them to remain living independently in their homes.
