Our Board of Directors are residents like you who have a true love for our community and want to ensure that Lake Mills continues to thrive in future years. One way we fulfill our commitment to the betterment of our community and its citizens is through our continued support of local projects — especially those projects which help to improve the lives of our children.

Board Member Biographies

Aaron M. Genthe

(Appointed to our Board on 1/1/15)

Aaron’s 2nd term will expire on 12/31/20

Aaron moved to Lake Mills in 1999, as an opportunity arose to take over management of the local Edward Jones Investments Office.  Aaron is a fully licensed Series 7 Financial Advisor and is celebrating his 20th year serving his clients in the Lake Mills area.  In 2006, he accepted his company’s offer to become a Limited Partner with Edward Jones, thus becoming a partial owner in the firm.  Besides helping hundreds of local families with their financial goals and retirement planning, he has served several roles for over 15 years on the leadership team of the Southeast WI Edward Jones Region, primarily as a mentor/trainer/coach to other advisors.

Aaron grew up in Richland Center, WI in his parent’s jewelry store business and graduated from high school there in 1992.  After high school, Aaron attended UW-Whitewater where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Finance & Marketing, in 1996.  Upon college graduation he went on to work as a stockbroker for 2 years (1997-1998) at OLDE Stockbrokers in Madison, before making the career change to Edward Jones in Lake Mills.  

Aaron is a proud parent of his three children – Ryan (21), Alexis (18) and Adriana (16).  Ryan is a junior at UW-Whitewater, Alexis and Adriana both attend Lake Mills High School, as a senior and sophomore respectively.

Jay S. Smith

(Appointed to our Board on 1/1/09)

Jay’s 2nd term on our board would have expired on 12/31/14

As of 1/1/13 Jay moved into Director At-Large Status, non- voting & no term limit

Our Director At-Large role is very important as this position is the on-going resource to our board to provide continuity of purpose, mission and insight to board policies, processes, procedures and practices.  This function is present at all board meetings and assists committees, as warranted. 

Jay moved to Lake Mills, Wisconsin in June of 2007 when he joined the law firm of Neuberger, Griggs, Sweet & Smith, LLP as an Associate Attorney.  Jay’s practice with the firm focuses on the areas of Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Administration, Elder Law, Business and Real Estate.


Jay is a graduate of New Glarus High School in New Glarus, Wisconsin.  Jay achieved his Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, with majors in Political Science and German Studies and a minor in History.  He received his Juris Doctorate Degree from Marquette University Law School in 2007. In 2002, Jay also had the opportunity to study abroad in Oldenburg, Germany.


Jay and his wife, Jessica, have 3 daughters, Adeline, Lucy and Hazel.


Jay is an active member of the Lake Mills Rotary Club, having served as President from 2014-15.  He is also a former board member and Vice President of the Lake Mills Main Street Program.

Wayne Magnussen

Wayne’s 2nd term will expire on 12/31/20

Wayne grew up on a dairy farm north of Lake Mills.  He attended a one room schoolhouse at Faville Grove School and is a graduate of Lake Mills High School-Class of 1961.

Wayne has spent most of his time as a resident of the Lake Mills area and has resided in the City of Lake Mills with his wife Sharon since 1977.

Professionally Wayne farmed for a short time and in 1968 joined Graper Feed Company as a partner.  In 1974 Wayne and Sharon purchased the company, which became known as Lake Mills Feed & Grain, Inc.  After 30 years, the business was sold and Wayne and Sharon retired in 1998. Wayne still owns farm land and does some recreational farming.

Kenneth Stetson

Ken’s 2nd term will expire on 12/31/20

Ken spent some of his early childhood in Lake Mills (1942-1945), while his father, George, served in WWII.  Ken received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1961 and his Masters in 1968, both from UW Madison. In 1978, he obtained a PhD from Loyola in Chicago, IL.  Ken also completed graduate work at Rutgers University, University of Chicago and University of Washington in Seattle.

Ken worked as a teacher and coach at the Jefferson Senior High School in Jefferson, WI from 1961-1968.  After teaching in Jefferson, he was one of the founding faculty members at Kankakee Community College in Illinois, where he taught for 3 years and was the Social Science Division Chair.  In 1971, he began working at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, IL, where he was an Assistant Provost and Assistant Professor.

Ken and his wife, Dixie, purchased a house in Lake Mills in 1991.  In 1992, after 31 years in education, Ken retired from Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago).  Unfortunately, Dixie passed away unexpectedly in 2015. Ken has 4 children and 13 grandchildren, one of whom is teaching 7th Grade Special Education at Lake Mills Middle School.

Carol J. Burrows

Carol’s 2nd term will expire on 12/31/20

Carol grew up on a farm outside of Sturtevant, WI, where she attended a one-room school until the middle of fifth grade, when her family moved to Lake Mills.  Carol is a graduate of Lake Mills High School-Class of 1961. After high school, she went on to receive her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from UW Whitewater. Carol taught kindergarten, first and second grade in the Fort Atkinson School District throughout her 28 years of teaching, and retired in 2003.

Since retirement, Carol has been able to “Rediscover the Charm of Lake Mills”.  She has taken advantage of being able to give back to the community that gave her children such a great start.  Carol stays busy by participating as a member in the Franklin Else Band Stand Renovation Project and the Lake Mills Tourism Evaluation, as well as volunteering with the Parks Department.

Carol is extremely proud of her two adult children and five grandchildren, whom she loves spending time with.  She considers her children and grandchildren the greatest blessing and highest achievement in her life.

Peggy Draeger

(Appointed to our Board on 3/10/15)

Peggy’s 2nd term will expire on 12/31/21

Peggy has lived in Lake Mills since the age of two, when her parents bought a storefront in downtown Lake Mills called “Derse’s Village Square”.   Peggy’s family lived in the very large apartment above the store for many years. She has many fond memories of living right downtown in the heart of Lake Mills, such as being able to walk to Bartel’s Beach with her friends and being able to take part in the Town and Country Days Maxwell Street Days in selling merchandise to the crowds of people in town for the parade.  She also remembers opening the windows that faced the park and listening to the City Band play every Friday night in the summer. Lake Mills has always been home for Peggy.

After graduating from Lake Mills High School in 1985, Peggy attended Carroll College for 2 ½ years working towards a degree in Communications.  She left college to get married in 1988, but returned to vocational school and received her certification in massage therapy, which she practiced for six years.  Thereafter, Peggy again returned to Madison Area Technical College and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. She then began working as an Employment Specialist for Opportunities, Inc. in Fort Atkinson, WI.  She worked with six school districts, assisting students in matching them with business owners willing to train and eventually hire the students as employees.

In 2005, Peggy was offered the position of Store Manager at St. Vincent de Paul Society Thrift Store in Lake Mills.  Her mother was the previous manager for 28 years and her father was a charter member, having founded the organization with five other men from the Johnson Creek and Lake Mills areas.  In 2016, Peggy took the opportunity to become a Case Manager for Colonial Club Senior Activity Center and works with adults over the age of 60 helping them to find valuable resources enabling them to remain living independently in their homes.

Peggy and her husband, Jeff, have one daughter, Samantha, and enjoy living in the country with their numerous pets.

Pamela Rogers

Pam’s 1st term will expire on 12/31/19

Pam has lived in Jefferson County for 50 years and is a former Lake Mills City Council member and former Jefferson County Board Supervisor.  Born in California, Pam graduated from Wheaton High School, Wheaton, IL, after also living in Michigan and Kansas as a youngster. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in 1966 from Ripon College, Ripon, WI.

Pam was a classroom teacher, homebound instructor and tutor.  In 1986, she accepted a position as Community Relations Director/Volunteer Coordinator with Countryside Home, Jefferson County’s nursing home facility, until her retirement in 2000.

Pam’s husband, Steve, is retired from teaching although he still coaches in Jefferson.  They moved to Lake Mills in 1997. The couple have 2 children and 3 grandchildren.

Kerry Denson

(Appointed to our Board 1/1/2019)

Kerry’s 1st term will expire on 12/31/21

Kerry grew up in the vicinity of Oregon and Stoughton on various Farms. He was the oldest of four boys. They had a small herd of milk cows, pigs and chickens. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1964 at the age of 17. The youngest in his class starting first grade at age five in a one room schoolhouse.

After high school, Kerry Denson had applied for Pilot Training and was taking the test for it when he was drafted during the build up for Viet Nam. He continued his pilot process since the military was in need for pilots. He went from basic training straight to Flight School.

After returning to Wisconsin from active duty, Kerry then immediately joined the Wisconsin Army national guard and served in a variety of Command and staff assignments. He also enrolled at University of WI -Oshkosh and then transferred to Milton College where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration.

After Retirement, Denson started a business of public speaking on leadership, applied leadership, and is still engaged with the business. He has also been a long-time member of the National Railroad Museum. A year after retirement, Kerry became a volunteer at the museum as an engineer, operating full size diesel locomotives pulling two to six passenger cars. The Museum Board of Directors asked him to become a board member. He served 7 years as Secretary of Board of Directors in which attendance increased from 50,000 to over 100,000. His term limit ended just one year ago.

General Kerry Denson and his Wife Mary Ann Jackson now reside in Lake Mills.

Brian Watson

(Appointed to our board 1/1/19)

Brian’s 1st term will expire 12/31/21

Brian grew up on a farm in Elkhorn and graduated from high school there. Brian furthered his education at Milton College with an accounting degree, from UW-Whitewater with a MBA, and also from UW-Madison with a Master’s degree in taxation.

Brian lives in Milton with his wife Carol. They have two children, Emily and Rob. Emily is a high school guidance counselor at Edgewood High School and Rob is Brian’s partner in the Hardware store.

He is a CPA and practiced with the firm Virchow, Krause & Co., now called Baker Tilly, retiring as a partner in 2009. Brian and his son opened the Ace Hardware in Lake Mills in 2009 as well.
